One of the more difficult things about surgeries and sickness is the secrecy that sometimes surrounds these things. In a culture that seems to worship youth as much as this one, any sign of deviation from perfect health can be seen as something unthinkable. In truth, of course, everyone is sick now and then, and even the celebrities who become the poster children for youth culture are rarely in perfect health. More often than not, the appearance of this kind of robustness is often achieved at great risk to one’s health in the long-term.

It’s much healthier, then, to actually embrace the notion that health and sickness are relative terms. Learning how to accept the place for illness in the everyday world is the sign of a healthy culture. There shouldn’t be a negative connotation applied to things that make living and recovering necessary, whether it’s a home air filter, disinfectant soap, or ostomy supplies . They are part of the daily routine for so many people.

These artifacts of contemporary culture are, in fact, evidence of years of medical knowledge and common wisdom. In many societies, the elderly have an honored and respected place, and so do those with infirmities. Bringing the young world together with the rest of the worlds is one way toward breaking the secrecy, so that all the citizens can benefit and learn to live full lives.

What are the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments?

Grand Slam tennis tournaments refer to four different tennis tournaments: The French Open, Wimbledon, The US Open and The Australian Open.

They are called Grand Slams because in 1938 Don Budge won all four tournaments. The term originated from American writer Allison Danzig, who wrote that like a bridge player, Budge scored a ‘Grand Slam’ of victories.

The phrase started to become popular, but the Grand Slam events were in no way affiliated with one another until in 1989 when a committee was formed. This committee now forms the rules of all four Grand Slam tournaments.

Pete Sampras has won the most singles men’s Grand Slam titles with 14 titles total. Sampras, however, never did win a French Open title. Margaret Court has won the most on the ladies side with 24 titles to her name.

Only two men have won all four events in one year, Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969. Three women have taken all four titles in one year, they are: Maureen Connolly in 1963, Margaret Court in 1970 and Steffi Graff in 1988. Graff also went on that year to win a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympics; her 1988 season is referred to as “The Golden Grand Slam.”

Cleveland Clinic and Google to Team Up

Google and the Cleveland Clinic are beginning a pilot project to link the health information for some of clinic’s patients with Google personal health records. The pilot project will last six to eight weeks, and involve less than 10,000 patients.

The Cleveland Clinic has more than 100,000 patients and many of those are retirees who spend some of the year elsewhere such as Arizona and Florida. And when they go, their medical records don’t follow says Dr. C. Martin Harris, the clinic’s chief information officer. Read more
