Enjoying Bangkok

There is so much to see and do in Bangkok that visitors will find their trip over long before they have exhausted their wish list of activities and sites. Since Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, it offers many national political and cultural landmarks and is the home of the Thai royal family. The city itself dates back to its time as a small Khmer trading port in the time before the Ayutthaya Kingdom (which began in 1350). Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1768 and has been a political, economic, and social center for the region ever since.

Visitors to this exotic city can choose from the best Bangkok hotels, fine Thai dining, and some of the greatest shopping in the East. The cityscape includes traditional temples, mosques and palaces as well as modern skyscrapers and urban shopping malls. It’s this unique blending of ancient with modern that makes the energy of the city so intoxicating. The city was even named the “Best City in the World” in 2008.

Some of the more popular destinations in the city include the Ancient City and the Victory Monument. Bangkok is also home to the Grand Palace, which is the official residence of the royal family and the House of Parliament. Visitors may want to stroll through some of the city’s many museums, including the National Museum, the Anantasamakhom Throne Hall, the Bangkok Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art and the Royal Barge National Museum.

Bangkok has also worked to protect its natural wonders. There are a number of parks throughout the city including the famous Lumphini Park. The city also boasts the largest aquarium in southeast Asia, a Crocodile Farm and several zoos. Snake-lovers will want to visit the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute and Snake Farm while the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium features an indoor waterfall.
